![]() IMO needs another hook in there beyond just tanks.Īlthough in SABOW's era the technology is only 1/2 a step away from ww2. So to make a ww2 sim legit now may or may not be click with your general gamer sort. However with WOT and war thunder a more fake expectation is probably now the norm. All that make a legit ww2 tank sim appealing. Interesting to me is how popular Steel Fury is compared to SABOW.Īn actual historical tank sim ala ww2 is probably more game friendly than more modern sorts. It's WW2 of course and has no role-playing or crew management but the visuals and sounds are top notch and modded, the vehicle, mission and campaign sets are peerless: Not have to start off in the role of the company or battalion commander (via that clunky interface) and then wait for an opportunity to magically switch places with one of my tank commanders.įor a conventional tank sim, I'd recommend Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942. I want a tank sim to cast me in the role of a tank platoon leader, present me with a mission as part of a company-sized operation, let me make a quick combat appreciation & plan from the map and then hop into my tank and get down to business. Personally I find the 'tanksim in a wargame' approach unattractive, especially as the wargame interface is (to me anyway) unintuitive and a major chore. There are campaigns and the graphics and animations are much better than SB Pro PE. You can drop into a T-62 or an M-60, only at the point when a combat begins, during a mission you are running. SABOW is a tank sim wrapped inside a tactical wargame, which latter has what many report to be a difficult-to-fathom interface. I'm not sure how good AI is these days but you may remember that it certainly did some neat stuff like tank drivers jockeying into and out of hull-down positions. Sounds are a strong point including authentic intercom traffic and crew drills and there's the speed of sound for external noises. Graphics on the latest SB Pro PE are quite serviceable but have limited animation eg no crew opening hatches or suspension movement. You also have to act as your own FOO (forward observer) when calling down artillery, as opposed to simply indicating a target to an AI FOO. It does not simulate the role of your company commander you can step into that role 'in mission' and generate new orders for your side from the map screen, IIRC. It doesn't have campaigns as such (just some mission sets) and there's no role-playing or crew management (unlike M1TP2 for instance). ![]() SB (either version) is an extremely authentic simulator of the M1A1 and Leo 2 (some other vehicles are playable in the newer version). Try your old copy again if you have an old machine, typically up to Windows XP apart from graphics, it's still the same sim at heart. The original SB won't play on modern systems which generally can't run in the low resolution and colour depth SB uses. The current SB (Pro PE) is much more expensive. ![]() From the single-player perspective, here's my potted comparison. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.I played the original SB (the one with the very basic graphics).
